Ellie and Rich met in London, and while they're pleasant and warm-hearted people, as many of my clients are, what stands out the most about them is that they're an extremely unique couple. They share a delightfully inquisitive and curious nature that allows them to see beyond what others may see. Case and point, their venue choice – the chapel of an abandoned asylum for the mentally ill.
While not everyone may appreciate the setting (since it's often associated with unpleasant images) it's startlingly beautiful in a sort of dark and mysterious way, and surprisingly it makes a perfect backdrop for a classic wedding.
The evening before the wedding Ellie, Rich, and their family stayed in a converted pub they'd found through AirBnB. It was a great space for connecting and sharing in the anticipation and excitement of the day to come. Ellie made a gorgeous bride and took hardly any time at all to get ready. With very little makeup to polish her features, she still looked as if she'd stepped straight out of a bridal magazine.
As we left the residence to head for the venue, it was pouring down rain; an unexpected detail that might derail other weddings, but instead added to the charming and whimsical energy of the day. The chapel proved to be an excellent size, both intimate and accommodating. The colors and textures of the walls softened by candlelight made for one-of-a-kind photos and beautifully showcased Ellie and Rich as they took their vows.
Once the ceremony was finished, everyone was ushered to an intimate sit-down meal at nearby tables decorated gorgeously (and lovingly) by family and friends. The simple and delicious food was catered by Forgotten Feast and inspired by medieval fare – a perfect complement to the venue. Ellie's father gave a touching and hilarious speech that left the guests laughing and smiling in spite of the drop in temperature after the sun had set. Shortly after dinner all the guests climbed aboard an old route master bus on route to a Clerkenwell pub for live music and dancing well into the night.
Overall, Ellie and Rich's wedding was lovely and traditional, with a fabulous twist. It is by far one of the most unusual and atmospheric places I've ever photographed and was truly a pleasure to capture these memories for them.
